How to wash pyjamas correctly and keep them soft
Pyjamas are washed more frequently than most clothing, which means small mistakes in the wash routine compound quickly. The most common issues. Fabric going thin, colours fading, elastic losing its stretch. Are almost always caused by washing at the wrong temperature or drying incorrectly, not by the fabric being poor quality.
Temperature is the most important variable
Most pyjamas, regardless of fabric, should be washed at 30 or 40 degrees. Higher temperatures break down elastic faster, cause colours to fade more quickly, and can shrink natural fibres. The exception is if someone in the household is unwell, in which case a 60-degree wash is appropriate for cotton pieces to ensure hygiene. Satin and modal should not go above 40 degrees under any circumstances.
In most of Japan, tap water is soft. Softer water requires less detergent to achieve the same cleaning result, so if you are in a region with soft water, using the full recommended amount of detergent can leave residue in the fabric.
Drying: the step most people get wrong
Tumble drying is the fastest way to shorten the life of pyjamas. The heat and mechanical action break down elastic, shrink natural fibres, and cause pilling on brushed fabrics. Air drying takes longer but preserves the fabric significantly better.
For satin, lay flat to dry or hang on a wide plastic hanger. For cotton and modal, hanging is fine. For brushed or thermal fabrics, lay flat if possible to prevent the brushed surface from matting in one direction.
How often to wash
Pyjamas worn directly against the skin should be washed every two to three wears under normal circumstances. Robes, which are worn over pyjamas, can go longer between washes: once a week is sufficient for regular use.
Washing too frequently is not a problem in itself, but it does accelerate wear. If you find yourself washing pyjamas after every single wear, it is worth considering whether a second set would extend the life of both.
The care label is the starting point, but the habits above will keep most pyjamas in good condition well beyond what the label implies.
