Thermal pyjamas for autumn and winter: what to look for

Not all thermal sleepwear is bulky. Here is how to find a set that is warm and wearable

The first cold nights of autumn are usually when people realise their summer pyjamas are no longer adequate. Thermal sleepwear has improved considerably in the last several years. The best options now are warm without being heavy, and smooth enough on the outside that they do not look like long underwear.

How brushed fabrics work

The warmth in a thermal pyjama set comes from the inner surface of the fabric, not the outer one. In a brushed construction, the inner face of the fabric is mechanically raised to create a soft, slightly fluffy surface that traps a layer of warm air close to the skin. The outer face remains smooth.

This is why a good thermal pyjama set can look quite ordinary from the outside while being noticeably warmer than a standard cotton set. The fabric weight is typically higher than a summer pyjama, but because the warmth comes from the trapped air rather than the fabric mass, it does not need to be very thick to be effective.

Cotton versus synthetic blends for warmth

Pure cotton thermal sets exist and are comfortable, but they tend to be heavier than blended fabrics for the same level of warmth. A cotton-polyester blend in a brushed construction can achieve the same warmth at a lower fabric weight, which makes it more comfortable to sleep in because it does not restrict movement as much.

The trade-off is breathability. Cotton breathes better than polyester, so if you tend to sleep warm, a higher cotton content is worth looking for. If you tend to sleep cold, a blend with a higher polyester content will retain heat more effectively.

Layering for the coldest nights

On very cold nights, the most effective approach is to layer a thermal pyjama set under a robe rather than switching to a heavier pyjama. A waffle-knit or plush robe over a thermal set provides significantly more warmth than a single heavier garment, and you can remove the robe once you are in bed. Elasticated cuffs on the pyjama trousers and top prevent draughts when you are moving around before bed.

A good thermal set is worth buying once and keeping for several winters. The brushed surface actually softens slightly with washing, so it gets better over time.
