We only stock what we would actually wear ourselves at 3 a.m. Monastery101 started in the spring of 2019 from a single room in Tokyo, built around one gap: the loungewear on offer was either cheap and scratchy or expensive and impractical. We ordered small quantities of satin and cotton jersey from fabric suppliers, tested them at home, and sold the first sets through a local Instagram account. The first twenty pieces went in a weekend, mostly to friends, and that was enough to keep going.
