Homewear as a gift: what to buy and how to get the size right
Pyjamas and loungewear are one of those gift categories that people are slightly nervous about. The concern is usually sizing. But with a little information and the right approach, homewear is actually one of the more reliable gifts you can give, because almost everyone wears it and almost everyone has a preference for something softer than what they currently own.
Choosing the right style for the person
The first question is what the person actually does at home. If they work from home, a lounge set in French terry or ribbed modal is more useful than a satin pyjama set, because it looks intentional enough for a video call. If they are a dedicated sleeper who wants something specifically for bed, a satin set or a washed cotton sleep shirt is the better choice.
For someone who is hard to read, a robe is a safe option. Robes are sized generously, they work over whatever someone already wears to bed, and they have a clear practical use. The waffle-knit cotton robe in particular tends to be well-received because it does not look like a hotel amenity.
Getting the size right without asking directly
If you do not want to ask the person directly, the most reliable approach is to think about their clothing size in everyday clothes and then size up by one. Homewear is generally worn with more ease than daywear, and most people prefer their loungewear slightly roomier than their regular clothes.
For robes specifically, sizing up is almost always the right call. A robe that is slightly large is comfortable; one that is slightly small feels restrictive. Our robes run from S to 3XL and the product page has specific notes on how each size fits over a pyjama set.
Making the parcel feel like a gift
All orders from Monastery101 are packed in tissue paper as standard. For gift orders, add a note at checkout and we will include a handwritten card and exclude the receipt from the parcel. The gift sets come in a reusable cotton drawstring bag, which is a good option if you want the packaging to do some of the work for you.
The most common feedback we get on gift orders is that the packaging made the recipient feel like the gift was chosen carefully. That is worth something.
